• DLI Schools in Jordan School District 

• What is DLI exactly?

Dual Language Immersion is a program that helps children learn to read, write, and speak fluently in two languages. In Utah, elementary students from 1st grade to 6th grade spend half of their school day learning in one language and the other half in English ( 50-50). They have two teachers: one for each language. This approach helps students become comfortable using both languages and prepares them to interact in a diverse world. The program continues up to 12th grade with University classes available in High School.

 

• What curriculum do DLI teachers follow?

DLI teachers follow the same state curriculum as non-DLI teachers. Core subjects like Math, Science, and Social Studies have been adapted and translated to meet the needs of DLI students. For literacy, the state has adopted programs used by native speakers that are accessible to second-language learners. For instance, Spanish uses "Estrellita."

• Is DLI for my child?

Absolutely! DLI is open to any student. Parents who wish to give their child the gift of speaking another language fluently can apply.

 

• Is there a test to enter the program?

No, there is no test or requirement to enter DLI in 1st grade. However, for upper grade levels, your child will need to meet the expected proficiency level for that grade. In such cases, we will assess your child's listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in the target language.

 

• What if we live outside the school boundaries?

If your child is accepted into the DLI program, you will receive a permit allowing them to attend the school.

 

• Are DLI students academically behind because of the second language?

Research has shown that DLI students perform at the same level or better than non-DLI students in all subjects.

 

• What if we decide to withdraw from the program?

While we encourage parents to commit to the DLI program, withdrawal is possible. However, students will not be able to re-enter the program later. If you were on a permit, your child would need to change schools.

 

• What if my child is not a future 1st grader but already in an upper grade level?

If your child is in an upper grade level, they will need to meet the expected proficiency level for that grade. We will assess their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language.

 

• What if we want to move to a different school district in Utah?

If you are moving to a different school district in Utah with a child currently enrolled in a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program, you should contact the new district to enquire about transferring your child; most Utah districts will allow transfer students into their DLI program if space is available, and they may require an assessment to determine placement level. 

 

• What if I missed the application deadline?

If you missed the deadline, contact the school. If there is still space, they will allow you to submit an application.
